What does a diesel service technician do?
Almost every industry, community and government agency relies on large trucks, heavy machinery, buses and other large vehicles in one way or another. Transportation is what keeps our economy moving. It’s also what helps keep construction projects moving, goods flowing, etc. Diesel service technicians repair these types of vehicles that use diesel engines.
In your role, you’ll likely have to diagnose problems, create plans for repairs and execute the mechanical fixes. This will also require developing customer service skills and the ability to work independently, as well as with others. Your diesel service technician training will likely be led by instructors with professional experience and insight. Try to absorb the lessons of their diesel service experience they share with you as you learn.
Salary and job growth for diesel service techs
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects an average growth for diesel service technicians through 2031.
Where can diesel service techs find jobs?
The BLS also breaks down the four main types of work environments and businesses that hire diesel service technicians:
• Truck transportation — 19 percent
• Wholesale trade — 15 percent
• State and local government, excluding education and hospitals — 10 percent
• Automotive repair and maintenance — 8 percent
No matter which kind of employer hires you, expect to work in a shop with plenty of noise. Anywhere you work should be designed for good ventilation, if you work indoors. Sometimes, diesel service techs must work in harsh weather, or on holidays and weekends, to get the job done.
Diesel service technician training programs
Many diesel service technician school students appreciate the short-term approach many diesel service technician programs take. In fact, most can be completed in about 12 months. The cost and duration of your program options should definitely be part of your decision-making process, but honestly, the most important thing to consider is the program curriculum. Be sure you feel confident about the goals of any diesel service training you consider.
Common learning outcomes in diesel service tech programs include the ability to:
• Perform a thorough inspection of the vehicle needing service
• Exhibit customer service skills when explaining repairs and procedures
• Complete beginner and expert repairs
• Create and abide by repair checklists to ensure thorough service
• Work on electronic control systems
Of course, every type of diesel service technician training program will be a little different. That’s another reason why we encourage you to consider all your options for training.
