How Long Is Aircraft Mechanic School?
You’ve decided to pursue a career as an aircraft mechanic. You’re eager to jump in with both feet and learn what you need to know so you can succeed in the field. But how long will that training process actually take? How long is aircraft mechanic school?
Aircraft Mechanic Certificate Programs
One of the quickest ways to get the education you need for an entry-level aircraft mechanic job is with a certificate program. Typically lasting between 12 and 24 months, certificate programs are designed to quickly teach you the ins and outs of aircraft maintenance and repair—and then give you the chance to actually get your hands dirty working with industry-standard equipment and tools.
Qualified programs prepare you to meet the standards and requirements set by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in order to work in the industry. By the time you graduate, you should be ready to earn the certifications you need in order to get to work.
Aircraft Mechanic Associate Degree Programs
Associate degree programs are generally meant to be completed in about two years. Usually a little bit more in-depth, an associate degree option often makes a better fit for students who are interested in avionics technology. The increased complexity related to electronics, digital systems, and computerized instruments and features means more training is needed for the skilled technicians who manage these components.
Certifications and Specializations
No matter what program you choose, there will always be more to learn. The aviation industry is constantly changing and improving, incorporating new technologies and best practices, and striving toward greater efficiencies.
This sometimes takes the form of coordinated programs you enroll in—whether a day-long training or even weeks or months of structured learning—but sometimes it’s just learning on the job and continually advancing your skill sets. It can also help you pursue special certifications or authorizations, such as for becoming an inspector or examiner or for taking on supervisory or managerial roles.
Don’t waste another day thinking about whether to attend school to become an aircraft mechanic or avionics technician!
