Imagine America Foundation Honors Hong-ye Huang with a 2008 LDRSHIP Award
Washington, DC (Sept 26, 2008) – The Imagine America Foundation is pleased to announce that the LDRSHIP Award for 2008 was awarded to Hong-ye Huang for his outstanding achievements as both a student of ECPI Technical College and as a soldier in the U.S. Marine Corps.
After the 9/11 attacks, Huang joined the Marines because he felt it was his duty to help protect America. In July of 2006, Huang was part of the American-Lebanese evacuation, which rescued 800 people from war-battered Lebanon.
“There are a lot of sacrifices,” says Huang. “I honor those who have sacrificed their lives. I’ve seen children without their family and people wanting to end the war. I’ve looked at myself and thought we’re very fortunate to be where we are. Other countries I’ve seen aren’t so fortunate.”
Throughout his service and college career experience, Huang has received numerous medals and honors. For his role in the American-Lebanese evacuation, Huang received the Humanitarian Service Medal, his second. He also received military honors including the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, and the National Defense Service Medal. After five weeks at ECPI Technical College, Huang received the Outstanding Student Award, which is selected by faculty, staff and students.
On Tuesday, September 23, 2008, while in Washington, DC, Huang was honored with the Imagine America Foundation’s LDRSHIP Award.
The LDRSHIP Award was established to recognize outstanding career college students who have served their country honorably through military duty. The award is given annually to men and women nationwide who exemplify: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage.
The awards ceremony took place in a prestigious IAF sponsored event on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, co-hosted by Military.com and in cooperation with the Career College Association. Huang, along with five other outstanding individuals, was presented with a $5,000 cash grant to be used towards completing their career educations.
“It’s a privilege to honor the 2008 LDRSHIP recipients with this award,” said Robert L. Martin, Imagine America Foundation president. “For their admirable and courageous service to our country, we extend deepest appreciation. It’s now our turn to give something back to them.”
Huang is pursuing his Bachelor degree in Computer Information Science/Information Systems. At ECPI Technical College, he has maintained a 3.9 GPA and has a perfect attendance record.
“I’m not the type of person that thinks he’s top notch,” says Huang. “I’m in school for a reason. Wanting to get a diploma and wanting to make more money.”
