(Washington, D.C.) – The Imagine America Foundation recently awarded their annual 2009 LDRSHIP Award to five worthy individuals in the career school industry. Christopher Harkleroad of Mahaffy earned the distinguished honor with his work at Triangle Tech in DuBois, PA and his service in the United States Army.

When asked why he applied, Harkleroad commented, “I’d be a fool not to. Money for school is hard to come by these days.”

“I was really excited to learn I’d won,” Harkleroad continued. “I still can’t believe I won for just doing my job.”

In October of 1990, Harkleroad deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Storm and was a part of the first breach conducted during the war. While deployed in South Korea, Harkleroad had successfully completed two of the Manchu Miles, each 25-mile march in commemoration of soldiers in the Ninth Infantry Regiment who made an 85-mile march for their assault on Tientsin during the 1900 Boxer Rebellion in China.

While working toward his Associate degree in Welding & Fabrication Technology, Harkleroad maintained a 4.0 and perfect attendance.

“It was absolutely wonderful to hear that Chris had won. During the whole application process, Chris was so humble about everything. He was so surprised when he had learned of this honor,” Stephanie Craig, President at Triangle Tech, said of Harkleroad’s winning.

The LDRSHIP award is given to exceptional students who demonstrate Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage throughout their education and service in the military.

“It’s a privilege to honor the 2009 LDRSHIP recipients with this award,” said Robert L. Martin, Imagine America Foundation President. “For their admirable and courageous service to our country, we extend deepest appreciation. It’s now our turn to give something back to them.”

The Imagine America Foundation established the LDRSHIP Award in 2004 to recognize and honor exceptional career college students who have served their country honorably in the military and decided to further their education. The LDRSHIP Award offers up to $5,000 in cash grants toward college tuition to active duty, reservist, honorably discharged or retired U.S. military veterans attending a participating Imagine America institution.
