Six Military Leaders Honored
On a beautiful, sunny September afternoon, the Imagine America Foundation recognized six outstanding individuals who have shown remarkable achievements throughout their careers as both students and as soldiers in the U.S. military. On Tuesday, September 23, 2008, the Imagine America Foundation hosted the 2008 LDRSHIP Awards reception on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., along with co-host Military.com and in cooperation with the Career College Association.
“It’s a privilege to honor the 2008 LDRSHIP recipients with this award,” said Robert L. Martin, Imagine America Foundation president. “For their admirable and courageous service to our country, we extend deepest appreciation. It’s now our turn to give something back to them.”
The six honorees were:
- Jason Brandon – U.S. Army, Westwood College, Upland, Calif.
- Cheryl Carr – U.S. Navy, The Art Institute of Indianapolis, Indianapolis, Ind.
- Latonya Davis – U.S. Navy, Herzing College, Atlanta, Ga.
- Sharonda Davis – U.S. Navy, Concorde Career Institute, Arlington, Texas
- Hong-ye Huang – U.S. Marines, ECPI Technical College, Glen Allen, Va.
- James Ramirez – U.S. Army, Marine Mechanics Institute, Orlando, Fla.
In a stunning, pale blue room in the Longworth House Office Building, family, friends, college representatives and others gathered. Martin began the presentation by thanking the recipients for courageously serving our country. Amongst applause and a few tears from family members, each recipient was called to the podium to accept their award. Toward the end of the presentation, the Foundation was honored to have Congressman Joe Barton of Texas stop by to make a few remarks.
The LDRSHIP Award was established in 2004 to recognize outstanding career college students who have served their country honorably in the military and who have decided to further their education. The LDRSHIP Award offers up to $5,000 in cash grants to active duty, reservist, honorably discharged or retired U.S. military personnel attending a participating Imagine America institution. In order to qualify for the award, honorees must maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average and at least a 95 percent attendance record at an Imagine America participating institution.
