Typewriter

Christopher Latham Sholes invented the first successful typewriter in 1868. Many male clerical workers refused to give up longhand and adapt to the new technology, but the tremendous growth of business paperwork ensured that the time- and laborsaving typewriter was here to stay. The invention of the typewriter expanded employment opportunities for women, increased the productivity of business offices, and contributed to the growth of career education.
